My name is Mike Pennacchi, lead network engineer for the Interop network. Up until I got here to do this show, I thought that the coolest thing about Splunk were their t-shirts, like, "Because are too busy...". But, it's given me an opportunity to work with the product, and one of our team leads, Jeff Horn, is responsible for routing and switching. His job is to go out and make sure that the routers and switches, and other devices, are working properly.

00:36
Well he was running around hammering on everyone that we needed to get syslog set up, and we needed to be able to get this into Splunk. Well, it wasn't until we ran into a situation where one of our team members misplaced his voice over IP telephone that we found out how useful this was.

00:53
And what we did was that we had had the mac address of that telephone recorded before we gave it to him. So, we went in, typed in that mac address into Splunk.

01:01
It showed when that device got an IP address, the IP address it got, and showed us all of the network access points that it had associated with as he was roaming around the building. And what we were able to see, was that, he had received a DHCP address around 8:12, just before he left, and that the last access point he had associated with was the one going out the building.

01:26
So, what it did was it gave us an idea of where the phone was. Was it still in the building? Or, was the phone in a taxicab somewhere, riding away?

01:34
So, for us, in troubleshooting problems here on the Interop Net, by being able to have a tool where we can go in and start typing in pieces of information and "AND"ing, "OR"ing, or "NOT"ing them together, we were able to drill in on exactly where the problem is, so we can isolate it, and then use our other tools to dig in deeper.
